My wife bought me a Pearl cajon a few weeks ago. I discovered it on youtube and realized I had to have one. After beating on it for a few weeks, it’s clear that like all musical insturments, there’s much more than meets the eye/ear. It will take training, practice and time to turn it from a wooden box into a musical insturment. But it’s a heck of alotta fun! I love it!

But there are people playing entire drums with just one Box!
Im starting today with learning, Good luck everyone
Today I bought myself a cajon. And I don’t really know how to play it. I guess my plan is to look for some pointers on the web and then basically start hitting it ‘till it sounds right. Any suggestions?

BTW, was up till 3am yesterday banging away on my new cajon, can’t say if I’m any good at it, but I was having fun! Found out that Arturo here in Seattle is offering cajon lessons to any group of at least 4 people!

I first saw and heard the cajon at a trade show where one of the booths had some live music: a vocalist, a guitarist and a cajonist(?). The sound that they were producing was amazing! Since then I’ve wanted to learn how to play the cajon, and I’ve finally bit the bullet this Christmas and bought myself a present. It just arrived today, and here goes nothing! From what I’ve read in reviews at musiciansfriend.com, folks have said that the Schalloch is a decent sounding box for the price—a recommended starter instrument. I can’t tell the difference, but it sounds good enough for me!
I first saw one of these when seeing Freddie Colloca’s band play. I thought “I have got to learn to play one of them!” I’m muy gringo but I hope that doesn’t disqualify me from playing it…
Wondering what the different kinds are, what kind of different sounds they make. Also if there’s a good book or DVD on learning to play. Finally, are the cheap Schalloch (?) cajones worthwhile to buy as a first instrument. Part of me wants to say – hey, it’s a box. Traditionally, they play packing crates or plywood boxes held together with duct tape, so anything would sound better than that.
