My latest genius idea is to start a novelty punk band where we play only children’s toy instruments. This means getting a toy drum kit, which is very handy if you dont have much space/talent.
I managed to finally borrow my mates old drum kit. He got it second hand 25 years ago- it might be listed under British Heritage, but it works.
I rarely get a chance to practise on a real kit and Im too broke and dont have enough space to buy or borrow one so my cunning way round this is to make my own. Pretty much anything sounds good if you hit it with a stick so its easy to construct a makeshift set with items you have at hand. Im still experimenting but I usually use the floor as bass (it helps if you have wooden floorboards), books for tom toms, a bit of tinfoil on a book for the snare etc. Ok, its not very rock n roll but its good for practice, its free, collapsable and doesnt wake up the baby next door very often. Im a bit stuck for what to use as cymbals. A cake tin lid doesnt really cut it. Am i the only one who does this?

I realized that its been two years since I’ve had a drum kit. I used to practice 40 minutes every day. The kit was never really mine, I borrowed it from my cousin since its been in storage for maybe 10 years. After seeing me play, he remembered how much fun it was and eventually asked for it back. Its been more than two years since I’ve been in a band too.
Unless you already are a decent player, don’t get a kit if you’re not ready to play at least 30 minutes per day every other day, or you’re going to stall and you’ll eventually let your expensive kit collect dust.
