Progress!! 2 years ago

I sat myself down on Friday afternoon, and put together a five-page website, that is just about ready to go live…after several weeks of procrastination, it was time to just get it done. I still can’t decide whether I want this to be a website design business site or a personal site to show and eventually sell my artwork. I think I’ll just have to build two sites and then I won’t need to decide.

The great thing, is that I learned so much just by doing it. If I did a little website building every day, in a few short months I’d be a CSS master.

here’s the deal. CSS/XHTML – the best way to build a website; tables should NOT be used to design a website, only for specific circumstances (i.e. calendar of events; contact lists, etc.). CSS allows the web designer to make universal site modifications down the road with minimal effort, and not just to text. Tables would make this process quite tedious.

I picked up this book, published by Sitepoint, that definitely provides some much-needed direction. It’s called “Build your own web site the right way, using HTML & CSS”. Money well spent! The fancy Flash and Javascript stuff will come in time. But having a solid understanding of XHTML and CSS seems to be the key from everything I’m reading.

I’m also using Lynda.com’s online video tutorials for help with Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc. A very good resource as well.

I don’t know understand why these pesky things are giving me so much trouble! I created the up, down, over and over/down states in Photoshop, but can’t seem to get it from here to working on a web page. I’ve been advised on Sitepoint’s forums to use CSS to make this work, but my CSS programming skills aren’t up to par just yet. I’m going to get a book on CSS and I’m sure that will help things.
