That’s where I’m headed today.
How to take more day trips
How I did it: First, get yourself a teenager. Then, have the teenager sign up for a big regional youth organization. Then, follow your teenager around to all the events and meetings as a driver, advisor, and/or chaperone. When you go, leave early, so you have time to visit things in your destination city. Voila! You are taking day trips!
Lessons & tips: Make sure the group goes to places you want to see. Mine goes to monthly events in large cities and metropolitan areas in the Mid-Atlantic region, which is perfect for my interests in museums, book stores, ethnic food stores, and urban farmers markets. My teenager got elected to a steering committee, so we will be taking day trips for three years. It also helps that the large group of youth and their families can make good recommendations about places to visit.
Downside: This got a lot cheaper this year after gas prices went down. As they go back up again, I will be looking for people to ride along and contribute gas money.

Drove to Lake Arrowhead…had breakfast, my husband & son took a water ski lesson…my daughter & I just relaxed in the boat…wandered around town, ate lunch, explored some back roads…cute cozy cabin homes, pulled over for some views! Beautiful Day!
...in Los Angeles was where we chose to go yesterday. It wasn’t exactly what I expected, but we enjoyed our outing. We walked around, stopped for Dim Sum, walked over to Olvera Street then drove to a few nearby stores before leaving Los Angeles.
Since I now have a friend in Memphis, I’ll be making lots of day trips up there. :]
...for us to spend more time in and around Los Angeles. I needed to pick up some supplies for Christmas dinner at a store near LA and afterwards we continued to shop, looked at lofts, explored the area and then accepted a relatives invitation to stop by for homemade pizza. It was fun not to have set plans or time constraints. We were gone for almost 15 hours and traveled about 300 miles.
The boyfriend and I went up to Gatlinburg for a two day trip, spur of the moment.
...we decided to go downtown Los Angeles for the afternoon. Went to the Grand Central Market, spent a couple hours browsing in a restaurant supply store and made a few more stops before heading home. The trip was only 160 miles, but it was a fun and unrushed day and we hope to do this more often in the future.
