How to learn how to drive a stick shift

How I did it: Went out for a lesson with my husband, the same person who taught me to drive an automatic 12 years ago. He bought a stick shift car last year but it took me this long to work up my nerve to learn how to drive a stick. I'm really glad I learned how to drive a stick! It didn't take long but I do need more practice. Lessons & tips: First tip: relax. Then, ask whoever is teaching you how to drive a stick to go over each step one at a time. Make sure you understand what each step entails and how to do it. I didn't even know what a clutch was nor the reasons why it's necessary to switch gears. This surprised my husband but he was happy to explain it all. |

How I did it: My parents helped me to learn how to drive a stick. My father had just bought a new jeep and I've always wanted a jeep, but I found out it was a stick so thought I would never be able to drive it. But my parents helped me learn. My first experience driving a manual transmission was a bit of a disappointment. When my friend from Olkusz let me get behind the wheel of his Audi, I expected that I’d at least be able to do as much as drive forward, but each time I jerked the car a meter up the road, the engine would turn off. Eventually I became so frustrated that I decided to call it a lesson.

I have a red VW Beetle and she’s a stick and yes, I drive like a demon. Woohoo! I’m so glad I learned how to drive a stick. I can drive ANYTHING now.

I’ve been looking for a new car and I’m really leaning towards a VW Beetle (my favorite car in the world). It seems like every one I’ve seen is a stickshift! I’m going to take it as a sign and when I go to the car lot on Saturday, I’m going to make sure I test drive a stickshift.

It’s hard for the first couple of times, but once you get use to it shifting becomes second nature. I think everyone should learn how to do this cause you never know when you’ll use it.
