Off Balance but Whatever... 5 months ago

I have been working on art projects. I like my job at the Nursing Home, a year this month \m/, because they are (finally) allowing me to be creative. But I don’t get paid a lot. (I can’t live off of my paychecks. So I’m still at ‘home’.) Plus, my work will just end up in the garbage anyway. But whatever. I made the world a better place, for awhile, with my ‘skills’, I guess. And they want me to paint a certain scene on a wall. I’m not too sure about it … but if they pay me. Hopefully they won’t be cheap. (Whatever ‘cheap’ would be.)

Instead of just another chore. Think about it, can you work on your art 5 days a week, for 8 hours a day? I don’t think so, at least I know I can’t. I do music, and the maximum I can pretty much do is about 2-3 days a week (outside of some personal practicing), without feeling like I’m some kind of machine / killing the creativity & fun out of it.

By doing something else, you’ll be doing yourself a favor, in that you’ll actually have fun doing art and will be enjoying it rather than cursing because it doesn’t pay and you will likely be more creative and resourceful on top of that.

I went back to school after being a professional musician for about 2 years. Sure it was hard, but I wanted to try and learn another major thing. My road was a bit too long, if I were to do it again I’d try and select more carefully what job I want to do and pick something that doesn’t require too much studies. Overall though I finished school, found a job and eventually worked out an arrangement with my boss so that I can work 3 days a week. My salary’s cut down, but what do I care, I’m already making more than 95% of musicians in a steady job and I get plenty of time to work on my art too, with no stress and plenty of artistic drive.

Take some time and think about it, getting a second career can be something exciting and will profit you not just on the money side…

here i go... 3 years ago

seems to me that i cannot paint unless I am have a part-time job. But it is hard to eat out of the money from a part time job. So, I am going to try my hand at being a hairdresser, which is a (hopefully) high paying part time job, so I can have time to paint, get ready for my MFA, etc… I love hairdressing also, and it would be great to get paid to do it. Hairdressing school starts in two weeks—here i go!

i attempt this constantly, it’s difficult to know what to charge for what you make.
