How to build a barn
How I did it: In reality this project (once Dare started on the foundation and the first bent) only took 3 months.. . Being we didn't want to spend alot of money on this project and in keeping with the self sustainable lifestyle we are adopting we took just under 2 years recycling all the material we were going to need for the project. We tore down a barn and other building for the wood as well as saved nails and salvaged tin for the roof. The timbers were also salvaged from other buildings and a few were cut at demonstrations were gifted to us;) We used gravel for the foundation that was hauled in by a friend and the only equipment we used other than the tractor for the gravel, was a skilsaw, hammer, chisel, tigertorch (to cure the foundation beams- bugs don't like charred wood!) and a drill. The entire frame was post and beam so it has no nails or screws, only wooden pins to hold the frame together! so exciting;) I am so proud of us all- but especially my honey who would still go hard at it whenthe rest of us were too tired:) xoxoxo love you baby!
Lessons & tips: take your time! Recycling and reclaiming used lumber is so the way to go!

And it has a barn of sorts on it, but that’s not good enough. I have a lot of ideas for what I want in it, and I don’t know how they will all fit in, so need to work all of that out.
I’d like:
- drive through for the horse trailer to park in.
- hay storage
- air conditioned section that will hold 2 14×14 stalls w/a removable wall and a tack room.
- a tool room
- room to park the equipment (lawn mower, rhino, spreader etc.)
That’s a tall order for one barn. I’d also like to do it for under $5,000. hahaha. OK, not really, but nice thought.

When I returned from my building course this summer I started constructing a barn using all reclaimed materials. I think the final cost of the barn was less than 400 dollars for our 14-20 1.5 story barn. THe frame was timber frame and utilized no nails in the structural components.
it took about 2 months
