Determine whether federal long-term care insurance is a good option for me.

I got a reply today. 14 months ago

They sent me a copy of my application for LTC. They said that if anything was highlighted in red, I should answer right away.

Nothing was highlighted. So I guess that means I just wait for their reply.

This doesn’t rule out the possibility that they’re asking my doctor questions.

I put my application together and submitted it this week. 14 months ago

The application was 8 pages long. That alone may be enough to stop some people. Me? It just delayed me 3 years.

I think there’s a 75/25 chance I’ll be denied. I knew that going in, but I *really knew that after finishing the questionnaire.

We’ll see. Obviously I will be retiring this goal: the long-term care insurance option was a good one for me, and I think I found the perfect plan that balances cost with risk.

An improvement in the website. 14 months ago

I read in the NARFE magazine that the federal long-term care insurance website (most likely part of OPM’s website) now has an interactive part that allows you to price out the various options for a complete packaqe.

I will try that out. This will allow me to see how practical such a package would be for me. I want several of the higher-priced options (such as inflation insurance), I’m sure.

I'm still not sure about this one. 18 months ago

I am tempted, however, just to send the application in. I have a dread, a heavy feeling, that I’ll be rejected.

I've been asked to write about this. 2 years ago

An article about long-term care insurance (the option provided by the Feds) for a local newsletter for retirees. So I guess I’ll have to learn about it!

The only problem with such an article is that it should be a little funny so that people will read it, so they’ll get past the really dry areas. Soooo….how does one make LTC insurance funny? The whole idea makes people run and hide!

I wasn't eligible initially. 2 years ago

That was when I retired. I might be eligible now. It’s expensive. It’s an option I should definitely think about, item by item. Odds are, however, I will be rejected even if I apply.
