got the paperwork 5 months ago

I’ve already met up with the lawyer & hubby and I were discussing our options last night…as far as the kids go. The rest is minor stuff. I wanted to cry thinking about it. Obviously I hope it never has to come to it, I can’t imagine my kids having to grow up with out mom & dad how hard it would be. Makes me realize I need to take better control of my life so we never have to worry about this, but it will be there god forbid. :(

    Well 6 months ago

Now that we’re finally married, we can get this taken care of. I have legal care services available to me through my work. I’ve already skimmed the list of lawyers available to me and have a few I can call. It’s covered by my employer so really there is no reason other than laziness for putting this off. Being parents of small children, it’s important to have this done should anything happen to us. I refuse to go another year without getting this taken care of. It will be done before this year is over!

we will be taking care of this once & for all. It will be good to have it done & not have it lingering in the back of my head…those “what if’s” suck!

    Complete! 19 months ago

This is complete as of yesterday. I went to the attorney’s and signed my documents in front of the appropriate witnesses so now I’m all set! In addition to a will, I had a power of attorney and health care surrogate document (basically if unconscious another trusted individual is designated to make medical decisions) drawn up. It feels so good to have these pieces of business taken care of. If you’re thinking about it, do it. It’s quick, painless and a relief to have it resolved before you actually need it.

Getting the ball rolling... 20 months ago

I have an appointment with an attorney this week to help me accomplish this goal. I’ve been meaning to do this since I bought my house (4 years ago) and am finally getting around to it. This may sound crazy, but I’m more concerned with what will happen to my dog if something happens to me. So we’ll make sure that’s included. Today I’m going to make sure the person I want to be my executor is comfortable with the task.

One thing I’ve noticed through this is when you mention anything remotely will-related to most people, the immediate reaction is, “Why, are you dying?” or “You’re young – why are you worried about that?” Isn’t that an odd reaction? Shouldn’t people be happy we’re planning ahead? I’m creating a will in the hopes that no one else will have to read it for MANY years. I don’t find it morbid at all; on the contrary, I find this type of planning for the future both responsible and thoughtful.
