I want to be in California, my home in the ocean, or near. But I’m stuck in minnesota. I gotta get home!!!!

SO worth doing 2 years ago

My ex-M and I used to drive up to Algonquin Park every year, rent a yurt, and stay for a long weekend.

Hiking when you can’t always see the trail beneath the snow is a greater adventure. And watching the snow glisten in the evening fire light is magical. Up close and personal encounters with wildlife are more common because the park is so sparsely populated by humans.

But the very best part of winter camping is the silence, the stillness and the eerie solitude.

left behind 2 years ago

This winter, my friends all went winter camping and last winter, two of them slept in a quincy that I helped make. To be honest, I didn’t know if I wanted to then, seeing as the weather down here is quite cold (minus 40 some), but now I feel like I’ve missed out. I’ve gotta go next year!!

easier than expected 2 years ago

winter camping was great, the only downside is the long nights where you spend your time trying to sleep

maybe this year? 3 years ago

my friend and I have been wanting to do this for years now, and we are not getting any younger so we should do this soon. But with me in the arctic and her in southern ontario it may be tough to get it all together. But if the will is strong enough, the way be present itself. Got a few months yet to make it happen.

brr..cold campin 4 years ago

Camping in below freezing weather is difficult, especially when all the tinder avaiable is wet.
From almost getting frostbite and having no fire, to have a fire finally and snuggling up in the tent which was surprisingly ware, winter camping is totally worth it and I plan on doing it again.

best camping ever 4 years ago

I went on a dogsledding, cc skiing and snowshoeing trip in high school and it was one of the best times in all of high school! Dogsledding is tiring, but FUN tiring because you don’t have to carry heavy packs on your back, and the dogs carry you for the most part. Because you KNOW you’re going winter camping, you anticipate the cold and are prepared, so it’s not that bad- pack polypropylene! During my trip, we even built snow shelters one night (quinzees) and slept in them overnight, and for other nights we slept in a canvas tent with a wood stove, which meant getting up in the middle of the night in shifts to tend the fire… but it also meant warmth! Just do it :)

Way to break in a new tent! 4 years ago

My friends Jillian and Alex helped me with this feat. We chose to go camping at Mt. Saint Helens during winter vacation of 2003. It was splendid. A small animal ate through the pocket of my tent where Jillian left her trail mix while we were drinking it up in Alex’s tent next door. Needless to say – we only spent one night amongst the snow – but what a night!

I went over New Years' one year 4 years ago

We carried our gear on a dogsled and ourselves on cross-country skiis. We set up our tent right on the cracking and shifting ice (because that was flatter than the snowy bushes). We slept in sleeping bags that had two layers: the inner wicking layer to draaw moisture away from your body and the outer layer for warmth. In the morning, there was frost and ice between my two bags: my own body moisture, frozen!

Strangely, my car broke down in the middle of nowhere as I was driving home. I didn’t panic, after being outside the past several nights. “I could just pull out that sleeping bag and I’d be fine, even if I had to spend the night here,” I thought.

I went winter camping because I really hate being cold. Now I have the answer to that question, “how bad could it be?” And whenever I’m feeling cold out in the Minnesota winter, I remember that at least I have a warm house to go back to!
