A friend and I took the new (to me) canoe out last Friday evening. We launched into Town Lake under the freeway, paddled around and drank beer for a couple of hours, then paddled back to where we put in.
Then, on Sunday, the girlie and kiddo and I had a canoe picnic. We launched from near the boat ramp at Festival Beach, paddled down to the I-35 bridge, ate lunch under the freeway, paddled around a little more, then went home.
Good times.

Almost there!

Last Sunday, I bought a Michi-craft 17’ Aluminum canoe from someone on craiglist. Today, a friend and I are going to take it for its shakedown cruise to make sure it doesn’t leak. It’s the one in the foreground in the picture. The blue plastic one in the background is the busted-ass canoe that I borrowed from a friend.

I’m doing research and watching craigslist. I guess I’m not really sure if I want a canoe or a kayak, or more importantly if I want a one person or 2 person deal. The problem with a 2 person is all the extra weight when going solo. Honestly I can’t think of anyone who would go with me anyways.

There is this lady up in N.WI who makes traditional canoes, and I wish i could go buy one someday!

I bought one yesterday from Dicks! They’re a lot cheaper than most places. We got a decent 3 seater for only $300!

well, my car has been displaced to the driveway while the garage is the current home for my (drum roll, please) shiny new 14.5 ft canoe! it’ll be much easier with the kids than a kayak would be. getting it up on the car was…interesting…but doable. it’s going to take a little practice driving for me to feel comfortable taking it up on the highway so we’ll be doing local touring for now!

i went kayaking on vacation last week, and it wasn’t too difficult fitting alex in the kayak with me. in fact, with an open cockpit (if that’s the right term), it would be really easy. probably couldn’t fit two kids in one, but i saw two little kids kayaking in kid sized kayaks. they both wanted to paddle…in a year or two gab might be big enough for her own.
i just loved being out on the water so much.
