I’m using Kubuntu 5.10 with KDE 3.5.2 in my IBM T43. It’s really not bad. I’m still trying to figure out how to upgrade to Dapper. I don’t agree in that it’s better than Windows but it’s certainly in the right path.

I installed Ubuntu Dapper flight 6 to this laptop and am still tuning it.
I installed Ubuntu on an ancient laptop that was one of the first laptops to be created. The low, low memory made the installation program run really slow; if you have a modern laptop with at least 128Mb of RAM you will have a rather quick install. The size of the Hard drive also made it pointless to install the full package, so I went with the server version intending to create a lightweight version – but there was no way to see the PCMCIA ethernet card and now I can not use apt-get to install new programs. If I could crack that little problem, then this laptop would be completely cool and worth doing.
Really, really worth pursuing. The system has a few things that need to be done, but all the bells and whistles, and well-thought-out implementation make this the best distribution I’ve ever used.
gothelin is starting to get stuff done again.
Way less painful than expected. I didn’t have to fiddle with anything to get it work. Not to mention it took 15mins to install not only the OS, but lots and lots of apps – as opposed to the 45 mins to install windows and the several hours it took after that to install all the apps I needed.
Love Linux and Ubuntu makes Linux very user-friendly.
Almost all laptops work out of the box except the modem which is understandable…
