I have been taking classes for my Masters of Secondary Education. I started in January of 2009 and I will be student teaching in January of 2010. I started substitute teaching. This has proven to have it’s own challenges. One of the most important aspects of teaching is classroom management. I think that when you are in a classroom for one or two days at a time it’s difficult to develop routines and procedures with the students. It will be very different with my own classroom. This can be good and bad. If I don’t take care to instill the most effective routines and procedures I could be in for a crazy school year.
How to become a high school teacher
How I did it: I went to a 4 year college to get my undergraduate degree and then went to a different college to obtain my teaching certificate. It took a while to find a job; my subject area is competitive and very few openings are available, but the job security is very good in public schools once a person gets tenure. It's a fantastic job. I love it. My students keep me up to date and they are the reason I smile every day when I walk through those doors.
Lessons & tips: Be patient.
Resources: Glasser! Know him. Love him. Follow his advice.

So I don’t get any more people making nasty assumptions about me.
Right now, I am not planning on being a highschool teacher nor is that what I am working for.
History, Religion and Politics in Canada (and a lil bit of immigration) is what interests me right now and that is what I am stydying in university. I don’t know what I will get to be when I am done it all and I don’t really care.
Going to university is not only about knowing exactly what you want to be when you get out of there. It’s about exploring things that you didn’t know existed.
My uncle and I (he’s a businessman in finance) were talking about what a history degree and possible masters or more would get me and I said why does it matter. If I pursue it to the exciting end it’‘ll be like 10 years from now anyways. That’s a really long time away for someone in their 20’s. But I did explain what some of my mentors have done with their degrees and that many of them do business like jobs because the critical thinking necessary for a history degree is similar to that of a business minded individual. Furthermore, I explained that understanding how past things unfolded (even if it is a project to do with finances) is important and historians and taught to look at the past and analyze. He thought I was full of shit, but then again, he’s never taken a history class in his life.
So then I pointed out that a lot of the people who handle census stuff and who look at trends that affect his world such as demographics and the effects of baby boomers and stuff are historians. He didin’t really have a response.
Anyways, so the point is. I don’t want to have a be all and end all goal for a career at the end of my long journey. I am content to explore what is out there.
So yes, I could see myself teaching high school and I wouldn’t mind it but I want to see what else is out there.
I don’t plan on having my own children or getting married or anything so I don’t feel like there is an incredibly time constraint for me. I feel like I can do whatever I want whenever I want. I have freedom now and 10 years from now and beyond that as well.

Mostly just in case being a book editor doesn’t pan out. Not to mention, those who can’t do teach.
