Now that I’ve finally made the switch to consoles for gaming I just need to find appropriate replacements for all my software (I already know of most replacement I need) and then it’s merely a matter of learning how to “do” stuff in Linux (read: Ubuntu). I learned DOS before Windows, and it kills me every time I play around with Linux not knowing the simplest command-line stuff. Eventually I’ll just have to bite the bullet and do it.
I’m still getting used to linux, but from what I have seen so far it is working wonders for me. I have had some problems, as I knew I would, but getting into Open-Source software is, in my opinion, a smart move. It was for me. I installed Ubuntu onto my old laptop with 128MB of RAM and it is still running great. Plus, it’s free!
Those without a state-of-the-art computer can probably use Debian or Mandriva instead of Ubuntu
Linux is an awsome OS and with distribution such as Ubuntu, linux is becoming easier to install and use. But Linux is not for everyone you have to be committed to learning to it, has it is a huge learning curb from windows. Even the easiest version of linux takes time.
Yes, you too can learn the mysteries of the BASH prompt, and maybe even some scripting too
Ubuntu is super easy to install and use, and the community support is above reproach. For a bit more of a challenge, but a much more customizeable system, go with Gentoo.
I built a webserver/wireless router with gentoo, it was lots of fun. I’m happy to share experience and work on problems with ya!
cheers!
I’ve done this several time with different computers. I really enjoy Linux, especially the Ubuntu distribution. My main computer for work is a Mac G5, with OS X.
Don’t make the mistake of installing linux first. instead install windows but leave 10 gigs on unpartioned space, then install windows. You will be able to easily share files between the systems if you also format part of your linux partion with fat32( not too difficult)
Linux as a desktop is pathetic to say the least. It really needs work in order to be used as a standard desktop OS. For one, everything is targeted at the expert. Even the “easy to use” ones require deep knowledge of how to do things.
I myself am an expert in this, but I still prefer Windows as a desktop OS and BSD as a server OS.
It’s interesting for about a week, but as a desktop user I find Linux (specifically, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Slackware, and Mandrake) to be very lacking in what I want. Plus, I need Photoshop to do my job, and running it through a recreation API just isn’t my idea of fun (or a good idea).
If you’re into experimenting with ‘new’ stuff though, it’s worth trying at the very least. You’ll gain a new appreciation for developers.
