I’m going to check this one off. I have a good system going, and it’s worked well for the last few quarters… I’m pretty busy right now, and much of it has been because I kept in touch with people since I adopted this goal. I need to keep it up, but I feel like I’ve succeeded and don’t need this on my daily list any more…

I’ve been very good about getting back to people who get in touch with me, and it’s definitely worked toward this goal—probably better than sending out reels into the ether… I’ve made a real effort to actually keep in touch with my most current clients since last fall. Just popping up to say “Hi!” to my contacts on my less busy weeks has really helped me get more work. I’m actually doing okay, work-wise, even though I basically took a month off to do a personal project [the animation for that documentary] and haven’t sent out that many reels lately.
When I first took up this goal, I thought of self-promotion as sending out reels and resumes, but it’s turned out that just keeping in touch with a handful of people and answering job ads promptly has been far more fruitful…
I work in graphite, usually doing portraits. I need to keep reminding past clients that I still exist and working to gather new clients.
That’s the only way I can really earn more money doing this job!!!
I’ve been slacking on this goal lately. I’ve had a lot of work to do, but I also need to gear up for this one. As soon as I finish off my current project, I want to recut my montage and add in all the projects that are missing. Then, I’ll do a big mailing, starting with the people who’ve slipped out of touch. I also need to jiggle my strategy for getting and keeping up with my clients and contacts. I need to work on that one and just set up a better system…
I’ve also wanted to do a flip-book for a long time, and I think I should chose that as my next downtime/self-promotion project. I could make a bunch of them as “go look at my work!” objects…
Today was an odd day, to say the least… I had a new client interview and three people contacted me about gigs, one of whom had something for the next three months [Wha]...
I should still have more work out there and get in touch with more people, but I’d like more days like these, please!
I still need to formulate a strategy for this long term, but for now I have my hands full until late February, if not longer. I have been replying to every job and gig that comes my way, but I do need to bother people before they put out an APB… I have gotten better at responding to ads, at least. Responding to people is much easier now that I have a good boilerplate email that I tweak to fit the person’s needs. I also have discovered that writing is a good “filler” action for the times when I have to wait for something to render or just need a break from looking at things.
I finished off the first of two books on self-promotion last night: Book Yourself Solid. The advice was broad and pretty general, and I found that I had always been doing a bunch of the things that he suggested. Still, it was a good refresher course, although I could do without the constant branding of his message—it’s just a list, not a Book Yourself Solid™ Seven Step Guide to Essential Marketing Steps for Success!
It did jog my memory about a few things that I wanted to push forward and do [postcards!], so I made a list of those as I went along… For now, I am booked or on hold through late February, but I do want to jog these things around in my head and have a to-do list going. Whenever I get busy and don’t actively promote myself, I end up having worse famine times.
to break this out as a separate goal so I see it daily. I want more work, and there’s only one way to get it! My clients love me, but I need more of them… This is something I specifically have to focus on in the new year…
