change everything is getting her shizz together
I put it on the calendar in a few weeks, and my mom is taking off work to help me out.
How I did it: My mom had several pints left over from her days of canning. We found a local place that let us pick our own tomatoes for 33 cents a pound and picked 24 pounds in about 20 minutes. Just boil them for a few minutes, skin them, chop them up, and then cook them a bit more before putting them in jars and boiling them.
Lessons & tips: I wouldn't attempt this alone...there's just too much boiling and chopping and timing to attempt with one two hands. Also, we set up a burner on the deck to do our boiling so the house wasn't so warm. Then we made banana bread so the house got warm anyway.
Resources: My mom (highly recommended, a mom or someone else who can show you how to do this!)

And they are expensive. Getting more so. My mom used to can tomatoes and I wanted to last year, but I didn’t put it on my list and it didn’t get done :( So hopefully this year it will…just to have some pints of diced and crushed tomatoes should cut down our grocery bill and give us a way to eat local throughout the year. It also helps us cut down on buying canned food, which has invariably been shipped in from somewhere, so it helps me with an unspoken goal of making from scratch what I could make from a can.
