I want to be like Elliot Stabler on SVU. I’m hoping to be in a sex crimes unit because I think that the people that commit those types of crimes need to be taken off the streets as fast as possible. It’s just disgusting. 3 years ago

I was called in to the chief’s office at 3 PM today and handed my promotion letter. It happened fast! I found out it was because one of our current detectives decided to go back to uniform so there was an opening. I went right from working a car wreck to the detectives staff meeting and then had to stay and finish up my reports from the day (since this was my last day of my work week, I couldn’t leave anything til tomorrow) so I didn’t get out of work til late. Probably won’t be the last time for that either.

My head is still spinning and I know I haven’t even begun to process this yet…I’m leaving tomorrow for a weekend in Chicago and a dear friend’s wedding so I won’t even have much time to think about it until I get back. Today was my last day as a uniform patrol officer and I didn’t even know it until it was over. Weird. I’ll miss some things but I’m excited about this next new step.

AND it looks like I will get fraud investigation, which is what I was hoping for…

Got the results of the interiew/application process yesterday. They ranked the 9 applicants and I’m #3. There are only 2 positions at this time so I’m still a patrol officer for now, but the list is good for a year and I’m first in line for another position that opens up. And I hear they are trying to get authorized to add another position sooner rather than later.

I’m a little disappointed but I know it will happen sometime, probably (hopefully!) within the next year.

Very short and sweet, same boring questions for everyone—what is your concept of what an investigator does? What strengths do you have as an investigator? What weaknesses etc. Why do you want to be an investigator?

My interview is on Monday, October 9th. The decision should be made and communicated very quickly after that. I keep hearing through the grapevine that everyone expects one of the two people promoted to be me, and I have made it known that I’m interested in a specialty that as far as I know, no one else is interested in, including people already up there, so hopefully that will help things along.

I’m very excited at the prospect and ready to do something different but I’ve been melancholy at work the last few days, feeling like my time in this job is possibly winding down. I really do love being a patrol officer. Watch change is this weekend and tonight and tomorrow night will be my last two on morning watch, after doing it for 18 months. I’m very ready to see daylight again and for the different pace and activities of day shift, but there are aspects of morning watch I’ll miss a lot, in addition to missing the fun parts of patrol all together. There’s a camaraderie among people who work the night shift, whether it’s the cops, other public safety or even the same convenience store clerks, delivery people, Waffle House waitresses and hotel staff you see all the time. Of course most of our collective conversation revolves around how tired we are that day and how much or little sleep we got before it was time to come to work! 6 years ago
