How I did it: I gathered all of my required tax forms, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1098-T, and W-2 together through all of January. Once all of the forms were available I set up an account with Turbo Tax. I entered all my data and then there was an error. I couldn't figure out how to fix it so I asked for help from customer service. When they seemed more clueless than I was, I switched to H&R Block. Their service was simpler and easier with an option to import forms from a lot of financial institutions. Once all the info was entered, I requested a new PIN from the IRS, added my bank info and filed. I should have my refund by the 21st of February. Read how I did it… 3 months ago

Yesterday, my last 2 financial institutions finally published the 1099-DIVs. This year I decided to try Turbo Tax given all the commercials I’ve seen for it and the fact that Mint.com endorses it. It sucked. I was up far too late last night trying to figure out what they wanted me to input. First thing this morning, I tried customer service… Oh, alas, I don’t think they have the tax experts they claim to on TV.
My live chat rep (who showed up after 30 minutes, not the advertised 5 minutes) kept telling me to do things that were physically impossible, couldn’t tell me how to deleted the bad form and start over and finally told me to phone the help desk.
While I was on hold for 30 minutes there, I opened up H&R Block, entered all my info and filed my federal return. Easy. Moral of the story: H&R Block is better. 3 months ago

It was going to be complicated and it would force me to rehash the memories of when my husband left. I knew it was procrastination and yet, once I sat down and stared at it all, I was able to do a bit at a time. The last push was a marathon, but I was determined to get this monkey off my back, once and for all. It was as if the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders.
