"It was a long way but it payed off!"
How I did it: I moved where I live today a little over two years ago and hated it immediatly. Even though I got together with a really great guy (whom I came to love very much) I always counted the weeks, yes even the days.
All I wanted was to go back home.
Now this feeling did not change in two years and I got to admit that the feeling of belonging in my case is relatively short-lived but it doesn't matter - it's about a feeling and feelings will change and develope.
I do not believe that I'll feel like I belong here for all my life - but for the moment it is perfect, I cannot imagine a place where I'd rather be right now.
I do not know when this sudden change of feeling happened, I know that I realized it only a few weeks ago when finally the chance arose to leave this place.
That moment I noticed (and I'm happy it wasn't too late) that I did not want to leave yet.
I was having so much fun, even though my boyfriend and me split up, even though the payment here's horrible. I do not want to leave yet.
When the feeling that I don't belong here anymore arrives I definitely will take my leave, I can nowadays, I couldn't for the past two years but not now!
So, I'm currently searching for a new flat to move to since my old one's a catastrophe. I think I'll stay here (knowing it was my decision and knowing why I chose to do this) for at least another year.
I feel that I can't leave... yet!
Lessons & tips: Don't believe that belonging ultimately means that you'll always stay at one place - you and your feelings will develope. You'll be yearning for different things a few years from now, you'll be wanting to leave some things that you like nowadays behind then as well.
Also:
* have fun at the place where you live, go out with friends and try out different locations - go bowling (it's so much fun), go see a movie, go dancing.
* also enjoy the simple things, for me it's taking a walk along the beach while watching the waves, yes I'm one of the lucky people living directly at the beach. :) But I also love sitting down in a coffeeshop have a large chai latte and just watch people flowing by. It's great!
* take your time! No, I'm not saying you should slug off, I only mean that you should take the time to take everything in and not just rish by in a hurry.
