cj219 cant believe half the year is gone.
We visited Slovakia this summer. Nice country. I learned a few words.
Ahoj – hello\goodby
Prosim – Please
Pivo – beer
dakujem – please
ako sa mate’ – How are you?
dobre den – good day
Would like to learn more.
I’m an American and I just moved to Bratislava to live with my Slovak wife. I need to learn Slovak so I can go somewhere without needing my wife. She is teaching me, but I’m not learning as fast as I would like to. I know there are other people who want to learn Slovak on here or that have already been learning. Any tips?
Ordered a Slovak book, supposedly it’s not great, but the best one from the rest. And it’s full of colors and pictures, which is great !!!! I’m a visual learning I think, so this will help me a lot. It’s for total beginners, like what I am, so I think it’s a good purchase and will help me learn. :)
Of course it doesn’t help with the pronunciation, but there’s time and the online Slovak TV for that. :P
Wow, I never thought I’d be learning Slovak one day … :)
I’ve learned very few basic phrases from the free trial program Byki, it’s great for very basic things!
But that isn’t enough, I need to learn vocabulary, grammar, and much more! I was thinking that the true teaching will come from a teacher, because I really want to know how to speak it well (and not sound like a tourist :P), but until that time comes, I will learn some things on my own. I’ve also installed the Slovak keyboard, it helps to know how words are spelled! If only I knew where ”!” the and other signs are. :P
Just so I won’t forget :
This looks like a pretty difficult language, so I am starting slowly, and I don’t expect to know it by a certain time. Besides, we are learning for our wholes lives, right? ;)
10 months, 3 weeks and 3 days and I know enough to confuse people (read – walk into the local police station and plead guilty to stealing my neighbor’s pig’s feet). It’s time to take it to the next level…
I’ve really been horrible with goal; my semester has been crazy busy and I unfortuantely had to take Spanish this semester so I feel like my brain is all over the place. This week I will try to spend fifteen minutes each day practicing my vocabulary.
My boyfriend is from Slovakia and i just adore him. One day i know i will met his parents and i want to be able to communicate with them with no problems =) That way we can focus on our relationship with each other instead of the language differences.
I’m not Slovak, have actually never been. But a friend of mine has been and teaches me some things. The language is one of the few I would love love to learn.

pallen asks,
“Hi, I can understand that as the last post was 23 weeks ago that no one is going to respond. I am looking for some help in learning some conversational Slovak as I have a few friends that are from Bratislavia. If anyone could help it would be great.”
