Ahoj! 14 months ago

I’m an American and I just moved to Bratislava to live with my Slovak wife. I need to learn Slovak so I can go somewhere without needing my wife. She is teaching me, but I’m not learning as fast as I would like to. I know there are other people who want to learn Slovak on here or that have already been learning. Any tips?

Bought a book! 15 months ago

Ordered a Slovak book, supposedly it’s not great, but the best one from the rest. And it’s full of colors and pictures, which is great !!!! I’m a visual learning I think, so this will help me a lot. It’s for total beginners, like what I am, so I think it’s a good purchase and will help me learn. :)

Of course it doesn’t help with the pronunciation, but there’s time and the online Slovak TV for that. :P

A New Language ! 15 months ago

Wow, I never thought I’d be learning Slovak one day … :)

I’ve learned very few basic phrases from the free trial program Byki, it’s great for very basic things!

But that isn’t enough, I need to learn vocabulary, grammar, and much more! I was thinking that the true teaching will come from a teacher, because I really want to know how to speak it well (and not sound like a tourist :P), but until that time comes, I will learn some things on my own. I’ve also installed the Slovak keyboard, it helps to know how words are spelled! If only I knew where ”!” the and other signs are. :P

Just so I won’t forget :

  • Zbožnujem = adore
  • Mrkva = carrot
  • Prosím = please (?) - NOT -Prošim !!
  • Neviem = I don’t know
  • a = and
  • Zajtra = tomorrow
  • Prečo = why

This looks like a pretty difficult language, so I am starting slowly, and I don’t expect to know it by a certain time. Besides, we are learning for our wholes lives, right? ;)

Ja som tu 18 months ago

10 months, 3 weeks and 3 days and I know enough to confuse people (read – walk into the local police station and plead guilty to stealing my neighbor’s pig’s feet). It’s time to take it to the next level…

in love--- 21 months ago

My boyfriend is from Slovakia and i just adore him. One day i know i will met his parents and i want to be able to communicate with them with no problems =) That way we can focus on our relationship with each other instead of the language differences.

Wanna teach me Slovak? 21 months ago

I’m not Slovak, have actually never been. But a friend of mine has been and teaches me some things. The language is one of the few I would love love to learn.

I’m half Slovak and I don’t know a single word of the language, but some of my relatives do. My great aunt is fluent in it, but there’s no way she could teach me because besides being 90 (!!) years old, she lives too far away. My grandma used to know it but has forgotten most words. My mom knows a few phrases here and there. I’ve just always thought it would be cool to be able to speak the language of my ancestors.
