It’d be nice if I could walk/run/bike anywhere I needed to go. For trips, I know plenty of people with cars if I need to resort to using one, but I’d rather hitchhike and meet folks anyway.

This is the greatest! Walking to the train, the post office, the library & even to work makes life so much less stressful and more enjoyable! I can’t say enough good things about living in such a place!

    I moved... 3 years ago

Portland’s public transit system is fantastic. I haven’t driven a car since I got here a month and a half ago. I’ve dropped a few pounds, too. Loving it.

I'm living in D.C. this summer!! 3 years ago

This will return to a goal in mid-August. Right now, however, I don’t have to drive. I walk and take the Metro. I love it!!

    This summer! 3 years ago

I’ll spend the summer in DC without my car. Yay! No driving-just the Metro. :-)

every day for three years… now I never have to! has made it a lot easier to factor some basic exercise (and fresh air!) into every day.

Did the big move... 4 years ago

We lived in Toronto, where driving a car was almost ridiculous and took the subway everywhere. Still, though, the commute was making us both (okay me) wrangy. So we moved to London (Ontario) and live in a little village within the city. I walk to work, and within a three minute walk in my little village are: three good restaurants with fantastic patios, two used bookstores, two vintage clothing stores, a library, a drugstore, a supermarket, a pet shop, what has been deemed by others to be the best coffeeshop in the city, hair places, novelty shops, and more. It has changed my life. I’ve lost weight from all the walking, I know my neighbours, it’s totally different. And London is smack in the middle of the snowbelt, so it’s nice to not have to shovel myself out of a driveway and then scrape the inch and a half of ice off the car. So worth it!

I’ve lived in New York City since 1986. In that time, I’ve seen the cost of a subway ride go from eighty five cents to two dollars. Still, it’s better than having to own a car.

You must be committed 4 years ago

You have to be committed to planning when you are car-free. Living as a pedestrian, a biker, or a transit-taker requires time and patience sometimes…and a good umbrella!

We stopped driving our car for a year, walking our kid to school, etc., and then when we moved back to SF we donated the car to KQED. Certainly, joining City Car Share sure helped. Now that we’re moving out of the city we have to have wheels again, but I’m glad I did it for 2.5 years!

San Francisco is public transportation paradise! 4 years ago

I’ve struggled with driving in the past, so being in a city with a great system of public transport is really refreshing. No more worries about car accidents or traffic jams.
