My mom died 8 years ago this November 18, 2008. Around this time of year I never forget to think about what this time of year felt like 8 years ago. I’ve never been more scared or more sad than I felt then. I was terrified of losing her. I remember it was my brother who noticed when she stopped breathing. It was a Friday night. When I cried myself to sleep, that night, I didn’t want to wake up. Things haven’t gotten easier – just different. I miss her dearly. I haven’t been the same since she has been gone. 4 years ago
Something I learned from my mom is to foster creativity in others and have fun. I have never known someone as carefree as my mom. She would encourage, basically, anything I wanted to do as a kid. She was open to new ideas I had and was always up for listening and contributing feedback. I dressed up, yesterday, for Halloween with Keaton. I was thinking of my mom and how she would never lose the childlike spirit. She would dress up for Halloween and pass out candy…she would decorate the house and really get into the holiday. 4 years ago
I could smell chocolate chip cookie dough, the other day…and it made me think about the beyond yummy chocolate chip cookies she always made for us. My mom didn’t cook very much. My dad was the cook. My mom had speciality items, however, and chocolate chip cookies were one of those things. They were so good. She told me that her secret was putting the cookie dough in the refrigerator overnight…hmm 4 years ago

So, something weird that I have been noticing, lately, is that I tend to sing these little songs my mom used to sing around the house. One of the silly songs was called Mairzy Doats.

It is a catchy melody but, I find it amazing that I remember something like this.

So, it is my mom’s birthday today. I haven’t ever forgotten about it since her passing. Usually someone mentions the date or if I know it is coming up I can just think – it’s my mom’s birthday today. My friend, Wendy, and I used to take time together to shop for our mom’s birthdays as her mom’s birthday was/is February 9th. We made it an annual event for the two of us. We always had so much fun doing it. I miss my mom. She would have been 68 this year. 5 years ago
My mom was in my dream last night. I was staying at a large hotel with my parents and my brother. My parents were waiting for our dinner reservations. I haven’t figured out if we were in Japan or if we were just at a Japanese restaurant in another country. The restaurant was part of the hotel. I remember going back to the hotel room, on and off, and awaiting this dinner event with my parents. It was odd and not very much happened as a result. Still, it was really great to see my mom again. 5 years ago
So, I had the Dulce De Leche Frappucino after work today…What a wonderful treat! Ah, so I was reminded that I like to think my love for caramel comes from my mother. She once told me that when she was pregnant with me she ate lots and lots of caramels. She said that is why I was so sweet…Aw, well…Caramel is my chocolate on many days, it’s great. 6 years ago
With the upcoming Easter holiday…I began thinking about my mom and her cute nicknames she would give to me. One of her favorites and most used was ‘Jellybean.’ Sometimes, Jellybean would stand alone…other times it would fit with a rhyme such as ‘I know what you mean, Jellybean.’ 6 years ago
So, as a kid, my mom would often remind me when it was time to go to bed. To make the long journey down the hall more enjoyable, she would let me put my feet on her feet – hold onto my hands and walk with me backwards all the way to my room. Sometimes, it was the only thing that worked. 6 years ago
Okay, I was very young when my mom, my brother and I were driving around in the big, white Buick when, somehow, the horn became stuck. We drove around with this wailing noise. I was so upset and started to cry. My brother didn’t seem to care. My mom felt bad for me and we stopped at McDonald’s to take a break from the blaring horn. I can relate to the ‘horn stuck’ scene in ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ so much for this reason. When I watched the scene I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. 6 years ago
Ah, my mom would take the bus to work just to let me have a car to drive to school. At the time, I didn’t realize what she was doing for me. She took the bus into the city and claimed she didn’t miss the bumper-to-bumper traffic. She always had a way of making the best out of any situation and made choices based on what she thought would be best for me. 6 years ago
So, I’ve been missing my mom a lot lately…thinking about her and decided to write entries about her whenever I feel like doing so. This one is about music and singing along with songs with my mom. She would never get the lyrics right…at times, I wonder if she did this on purpose because she knew I was such a stickler for lyrics…I would become irritated when I was very young. I remember singing along with her to the Police’s ‘Every Breath You Take’ and wow, was it all over the place…I remember her adding ‘every cake you bake’ which, ironically, wound up on a Sting album…(after the song Love is the Seventh Wave? on Dream of the Blue Turtles)...Anyway now I remember this and how endearing it is. 6 years ago
