Hubby and I moved to Taos, NM in 1997 so I could study writing with author Natalie Goldberg. We lasted three years. I always recommend that folks subscribe to the local paper for six months before moving. The level of violence and isolation amazed us. It was difficult to find community. I did manage to scraped together a band of wonderful women writing friends and we met twice a week for two years, but otherwise it felt remote and dark. I learned a lot and am very glad we went, but I’m also very grateful to have come home to green Ohio despite the humidity and lack of mountains. If its your dream, go for it. You can always undo it. I now think of Taos as a great place to visit.

I am moving to NM after the Holidays this year. I am so excited planning the move. I can’t wait to live in the ‘land of enchantment’. Any advice on picking a place to live near UNM? Feel free to throw it my way…

I absolutely love the “Land of Enchantment”...spent five years in the Taos / Red River area…great skiing in the winter, backpacking and canoeing in the summer, wonderful food year round

It’s beautiful. In the winter, the air smells like fireplaces and pinon wood. But, it’s a bit dull and very, very much run by a tiny cluster of a handful of families. It was fun to go, live for a bit, then rejoin civilization, but it wasn’t for me. The accent is a hoot, “yyyyyyyyyyy, no?”
