For a long time I thought I wanted an art degree, but I hated art school. I missed writing and felt that I wasn’t being academically challenged.
I was a year away from a BFA in photography when I decided that I needed to do something different. I determined that going into journalism would give me an opporunity to use my background in visual communication and to pursue my interest in documenting things (something that is shunned in the contemporary art world).
I went back to community college where I have been taking pre-journalism and general ed classes. Next fall I plan to move from Portland to Eugene and attend U of O. I have been accepted to the university, but need a few more credits before I can be accepted to the journalism program, which I hope to do by winter term 2009.

Just do it! It will make you feel smarter and more wordly. You will develop skills for everday use – even if you don’t want to be a journalist (I’m not) I’m proud of my knowledge of the media industry….

Having a degree in it is pretty useless. Get a degree in something you like and then write for a school or community newspaper or just freelance for a magazine or website. Getting the degree isn’t really worth it. It’s the experience that matters.
