Recycle as much as possible.

Recycling is easy when you get organized. Get/Make/Reuse separate small bins for each type of recyclable. I have a RECYCLABLE big bin in which everything recyclable goes. And at the end of the week, or when it gets full, I take it to the smaller bins (in the garage) to separate them. Only takes a few minutes.

Composting is also part of the equation, but sometimes not practical for people living in urban areas.

Recycled paper, cardboard, glass jars, plastic containers. Took soda cans downstairs so the social club can use the cash. Oh yes and all those newspapers. Al Gore would be pleased.
