How I did it: Really, when we went over the numbers, we were paying enough in rent each month on our house to just go ahead and buy one! So we did! Our house is a lovely three bedroom mid-century modern ranch with a basement, attached garage and HUGE backyard for Sully!
Resources: Use a buyer's agent! You will NOT find enough houses on your own or
you wont' find them soon enough to buy them before someone else does.
We walked through our house the day after it went on the market purely
because our agent had her eyes and ears open and knew what we wanted
and what our price range was.

My husband and I have had 5 years of amazing change and ups and downs and there are probably a few more things to settle but once we are done I cannot wait to buy our house and get on with it. We have spent years renting my old family home from my parents – which was great, especially as while we were renting it we got married and had our beautiful baby girl…but we need to be standing on our own now and even having moved to the UK I still feel like we are in the shadow of my husband’s parents now who helped us find the house we rent, helped us get into the house and then took over the decorating….so I still feel like this house that we live in is not ours. I’m hoping that 2010 is the start of the next phase for us…move back to Melbourne, find our dream home and have another child and really start putting down some firm roots somewhere.

We’re pushing this back another year or so. The economy has put a little too much pressure on us. My husband was laid off in January (thankfully he’s started a new job – one that pays more than his last, too), so no house this year. We do want to move to a new place, though. Our neighbors are becoming intolerable (they work on cars/motorcycles pretty much 24/7). Preferably somewhere a little less expensive, also, so we can start to save some money for a down-payment.

We’re renting for this first year, but we still want to buy soon-ish. We’ll start looking again around Christmas. We should be in good shape to buy by then. But we’re happy for now, because we love the little house we found to rent. It’s a great place to start our life together and we’re VERY excited.
