Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

bullbythehornsFinally have the time but...

do I have the commitment?
So, three weeks into having a year off and trying to stay motivated to work on my documentary. I have spent the last week getting the files prepped and am now transcribing all of my interviews so I can start in the paper edit.
It is the overwhelming self doubt that makes it hard to keep going. The fear that it will be crap, knowing that there is always things that could have been done better, footage I didn’t get or….
What I need to remember: the feeling I had shooting it, that I was finally doing something by myself, for myself, and how proud of myself I felt. That makes it all worth it. It is not about what other poeple think, and besides I am always too hard on myself anyways.
I have 30 hours of really interesting footage. I can make something good! 4 years ago

filmshootI want to finish my documentary.

I have been working on this documentary since 2004. I want it done. It has taken a while because since I started, I graduated with a triple major in International business, marketing and finance, then I traveled, then I finished an MBA in finance and international business, then I traveled throughout Europe. I have not finished sooner though because instead of seeking money from others, and feeling indebted or giving them creative control, I have been saving my own money to use towards the documentary. With this economy the way it is….it’s sure been slow. But things are looking good, I have the money I need now to hire a few people and pay for some much needed equipment and stock footage.

I have sat on the raw footage since 04. In 05 I had a rough cut, but lost it due to a hdd crash. Now I have a nice rough cut… and am anxious to get it into a fine cut. 5 years ago

bk_toniIts been a year since the fine cut

And it got great response. Now I want to re-cut for broadcast.
Which means:
- stirring up interest again
- raising money
- meeting some VPs of programming for networks.

Here we go! 6 years ago

I don’t even know where my documentary is anymore. I think I deleted it off my computer. 6 years ago

Footage sat 10 years on the shelf. Somehow got the momentum and cranked through a cut in 2 weeks. Done, done, done. Feels really good. 1 of my interviewees refused to release the footage, so I can’t do anything with it, but in a way, that’s better. Its thoroughly done now, and I can move on. 7 years ago

Mary HawkinsStill have a list...

So, one of the docs I was working on moved into fine cut stage and then moved back out of it again when they got more time to re-refine everything. I have a list going, so the weekend of the 22nd is going to be devoted to this one. 7 years ago

mumziemovin' forward on this again!

spoke with two folks i want to interview and both were willing to do it! now it’s a matter of setting up the shoots, probably in mid to late August when other projects are out of the way.

also, purchased and received in the mail the external hard drive i will need to edit this and other stuff i’ve been shooting. now it’s a matter of setting up instruction time with friend who offered or to sign up for an editing class or both. 7 years ago

Mary HawkinsJust a bit more...

The other doc I was working on is going into last looks, and there are a couple of things I need to fix. I gave them a list of the problems I noticed, and they’re going to get back to me with the changes that we should actually persue… 7 years ago

Mary HawkinsLate night, but...

It’s done. Everything I can do is out of my hands. We didn’t get the encoding done in time for me to do the DVD linking, but I explained to my bf how to do it and really… it’s not that tough. It ships out Monday… Cross your fingers! 7 years ago

Mary HawkinsAll that's left...

is loading up the actual movie and making the DVD. I know my bf had a loooong night last night, so I’m waiting a few hours before I call him. I’m chomping at the bit though—I want to get this done! 7 years ago

Mary HawkinsDelivery!

My boyfriend came by early this morning to grab a disk filled with all the pieces I’ve made. He now has everything that goes in the movie. I made the title page animation for the DVD today, so now I just need to build the interior pages and set up the DVD.

Almost there, although I still haven’t shaken off the “light at the end of the tunnel could be oncoming train” feeling… Two days left ‘til the deadline! 7 years ago

Mary HawkinsGetting there...

Last night I worked on the opening sequence to the film and got it done… I have to get it to Brian, but it’s done! Now I need to work on the DVD pages and master it. Everything has to be done before I leave for Alaska, so this is the big thing I’m working on this week… 7 years ago

Mary HawkinsFinal stretch...

I finally got a list of deliverables from my bf, and yesterday I started marching through them. I came up with a much nicer title card idea that I need to make sometime this weekend. After that, I just need to make the DVD menus and set it up for the duplicators. I’m going to be out of town when he finishes the movie, so we had a long conversation about timing and what needs to happen when. Everything has to go out this week so we can make them before Comicon. 7 years ago

Mary HawkinsMore today...

I bothered my boyfriend until he gave me the pieces I needed so I could work on this tonight… I’m rendering a bunch of IDs in the background, so I’ll have stuff to give him tomorrow. We’re going to have a quick meeting to figure out what we’re doing for his opening sequence, which is the next thing I need to finish off.

I also took a first look at the other piece that I’m working on, and it’s actually easier than I thought it was—they just need a few little pieces and some massaging. I was worried that it would be a new pile of work, but it’s far more reasonable. Of course, I haven’t worked on it for months, so I’m glad it is something relatively easy and approachable… Now I just need to carve out time to do it. 7 years ago

Mary HawkinsWebsite up!

Mary HawkinsOur doc...

My boyfriend shot a documentary about vinyl toys for his Masters thesis project, and we’re planning on putting it out on DVD this summer—he’s going to release it at ComiCon in July. I’m doing the graphics… I know there’s a bunch of stuff that we need to do, but I also don’t have a complete list. I do know that he’s planning on revisiting it and re-editing sections this spring, and I need to just keep track of where we are and where we’re going… 7 years ago

i have all the footage i need, now i just need to figure out the software that came with my videocamera. that part has been surprisingly difficult. now it’s all about the editing! 8 years ago

mumziespoke to editor

okay, since posting this goal, someone offered a camera i could use to finish. (my old camera moved away to the midwest over the summer.) also, spoke with friend who is film editor about grant possibities. could this project be headed from languishing to happening? why the hell not? after all, i wrote it down. and what does that mean??? that’s right: “it will happen!”

thanks to all you lovely cheerers, jokesters & fellow doers and dreamers out there in cyberville. 9 years ago
