I counted out one hundred characters in a newspaper yesterday and out of the hundred I could read 47; that’s not too bad! I’m learning about three or four new characters a day so it shouldn’t be too many years before I finish this!
I really regret not studying harder/paying attention at Chinese School. Most students there spoke English, instead of Chinese. Writing and reading is quite complicated, but I want to improve my skills.
I’m steadily getting better and better everyday. I can now recognize and pronounce about 3/7 of the characters that I see on the computer, on signs, newspapers, menus etc. I still have a hard time figuring out the whole meaning though.
my first step to finishing this goal is to take a reading/writing class starting in january. :)

muddart is really, really tired, but can't sleep
When I was living in China I got good enough that I could often get the gist of many articles, but not all the details. I’m a bit out of practice now, but it’s still a major goal.
My speaking is functionally fluent, but certainly would also improve if I reached this reading goal since the main area that I need for going to the next level in speaking is increasing my vocabulary.
P.S. I have seen a book in bookstores in China on this very subject, but have yet to purchase it. Don’t know if it’s available in U.S. I think the title is actually something like “Learning to Read the Newspaper in Chinese”
I now read and know about 35% of the characters in newspapers and magazines but I can only understand about 3% of what they’re actually dscussing. I only know the most basic characters that are used all the time so I can’t really tell yet if the newspapers are talking about the weather forecast or the traffic system. I only know the bits and pieces right now but eventually they will all come together.
