once upon a time I just wanted to have a nice looking physique like the super heros in comic books. I was probably 12 or 13.
later I decided that really wasn’t so important to me. I’d rather have a lot of functional strength that improves my athletic performance to have more fun at various sports. at the extreme, for the most part, elite level athletes in most sports look very different than pro bodybuilders but I’m more amazed at people for what they can DO than how they LOOK. Still, for me, just a regular person, I guess I’ll take whatever I can get. A little of both. I’m not going to do a lot of isolation exercises for biceps or calves or other areas I don’t have a strong need for, functionally, in the sports I enjoy. Will do mostly compound exercises using back and abs. But now I want a little bit of performance gain and a little bit of aesthetic gain in pretty much equal amounts. We’re all a bit vain and that’s ok.
