Ok, so the Nikon D40 is only $400. There are other things I could do with that money, of course, but I’ve wanted a camera for a long time, and I think having a project or hobby or something would be good for my mental health. So, save a little money, and then get it.

How to get a digital SLR camera"I bought a Nikon D700 digital SLR camera."
How I did it: When I came across the digital SLR camera, I knew I had to have one. Being able to view the pics you just took is something special. Especially if they are of great quality. I used the site I linked to above to find the camera I needed. They list the best prices of slr cameras on Ebay. After 28 days of hard work, even harder saving, and 1 day of searching, I had my camera. Well worth all the Ramen Noodles.
Lessons & tips: The same site compares a digital camera to a digital SLR camera. The guide is very helpful in deciding if you need to upgrade to SLR. I have linked to it below.

How I did it: I saved money and my whole family helped me out with getting it, I researched what I would want from my camera, and what kind of lenses I would want. I now have a brand new Sony A350, and its wonderful to use. I suppose the next step is learning to use it better. =) Read how I did it…

How I did it: Finally managed to convince myself it was necessary for my health and wellbeing, and I had some savings set aside. The savings WERE for my trip to Japan in September, but I'm earning enough money these days that I think I'll survive on the leftovers plus whatever else I can save between now and then. As an added bonus, I'll be able to take some beautiful photos while I'm over there, right? Read how I did it…
How I did it: I started a MFA program and one of the classes is a photography class. I had to get one. The assignment asked for a lot of manual setting to be changed. I nor do my pockets regret it :-). Read how I did it…

How I did it: I spent several months research DSLR cameras to understand their features and functions. I settled on a Canon digital Rebel xt, because it more than met my needs and was closer to my price range. I had experience with Canon as my other P&S camera was a Canon. I also had a Canon film SLR, I talked to several people about cameras to find out what they liked and why to help make an informed decision on what kind of came… Read how I did it…

i started a separate account to save up for a camera. I’m justifying this purchase to myself because if I really want to stop working for others and get my own business up and running in three years, I am going to need this camera to take the highest possible quality pictures of my products to sell on etsy.
Let’s see how fast I can save up while also contributing the normal amount to my other savings account.

I did a photography subject in university and since then i’ve wanted one. That’s coming up to 5 years ago now.
I travel a lot and so I worry that it’ll get stolen or broken or just be heady and a pain. But I decided I no longer cared.
Gonna get the Nikon D60, a nice entry level camera… if I decide it’s worth pumping more money into it, then I’ll but a new one a few years down the track.
Will buy one… next pay day! Come one pay day…
Threads is looking forward to finishing school...for now.
Well with my last camera smashed this gives me an opportunity to really look into a new/used SLR.
I’ve finally decided I can no longer wait for the ease and functionality of a digital SLR camera. I’ve long been a fan of Canon, currently using a Rebel 35mm SLR, and have opted for the EOS 450d Digital XSi for an amazing price. Along with both an 18-55mm lens and 90-300mm lens, I will also receive a 52mm wide angle conversion lens, TTL external flash, full size tripod, and a collection of accessories for just under $800.00. (Total savings is around $1,500.00!) I will place the order this week and hopefully receive the package by the start of next week. It will be nice to finally have immediate access to my photos and no longer have to wait until I develop the roll. 35mm film will always have a place in my heart, but I highly look forward to a digital alternative. :]
I fucking love photography. currently am rocking a film slr – canon rebel. have used digital slrs before and love them. if i can save up some money, i hope to buy myself one as a graduation present. art school, here i come.
I really enjoy my Canon Powershot, but I am so ready to upgrade to a DSLR—except that I don’t have the money to invest it one. I’ve been checking out the new Nikon D90 and would just love to have one of those, but I certainly don’t have the money for a brand-new DSLR.
sigh Maybe next year.
Or maybe I can just settle for a less expensive model sooner.

Dharmagirl asks,
“Nikon D300 DSLR, or Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR? Which is the best long term investment if I haven't any previous investments in glass? And does one or the other brand actually have better lens performance over the other?”

“Which model are you happy with for the long haul? Canon EOS Rebel XT gets decent reviews, but I like the idea of being able to double te service life of the shutter with the EOS 30D (for a couple hundred more). And what about a comparable Nikon??”
