I went on a charity bike ride yesterday. According to the pre ride information from the organisers it was either 56 or 58 miles.
According to my GPS it was actually 63 miles.
It was pretty easy until midday when it all got a bit too hot for comfort.

Finished Chattooga Century metric route on 8/13/05. 62.5 miles in 3:46 (16.6 mph). Lots of fun, and a challenge as well. Highly recommended!
Last metric century I rode was on a hybrid.
Now I have road hardware.
You can do it. Just pace yourself well and pick a route with the wind heading in the right direction. Climbing against the wind sucks the worst.
