Garage Band... 2 months ago

I record songs that I write on Garage Band, recording software that comes standard for Macs.

The thing is, none of the songs I’ve recorded are “done”. Either my mixing skills are lacking, or the songs themselves have not come to their full potential—most likely both.

I’d like to either go back and finish all these, along with some new ones, or do a live recording of an open mic show or something…then I can offer them to people who like my music for a low, low price.

My ultimate goal in recording a demo? I just want to play music and share it…and if I can make my work as a musician even a negligible part of my income, well, that would be wonderful!

my last entry got me thinking about blogging on my different music styles.

so. I’ve been writing quite a bit. I even wrote a song…not quite finished yet all on piano..no words. just keys. a song that is most likely reminiscent to Clint Mansell scores. I do enjoy his pieces. I’m even thinking about adding some sort of electronic music to it….kind of reminds me of that old DJ Shadow song, Organ Donor.

The other songs that I’ve written are more slow acoustic and somewhat jazzy songs. I’m glad I’m over this ethereal music stage..at least I hope so for now. It’s really quite annoying when I write music that doesn’t even suit my voice, so I don’t even want to perform them because I know my voice enough to KNOW when it WON’T sound good.

Anyways, I guess you could say I’ve been expanding musically. It’s fun to get creative and I’ve been doing it for the past year and a half by listening to all sorts of new music. Not stuck on this blues and pure jazz phase that I was on for quite sometime. my voice has changed. I like light blues like Corinne Bailey Rae, coffee-house like Rachael Yamagata or A Fine Frenzy, pure like Priscilla Ahn or Mandy Moore, well, I see Mandy (yes, I AM on a first name basis) finding a new niche in music, embarrassed by the candy shit music she put out in her previous records..and quite frankly, she should be. So her voice, as pure sounding as it is, I hear a raw-ness coming about as well. Anyways, her songs along with many pop artists have the common hook that drags so many listeners in, but where is the quality? Where is the depth? Alright..i’m not going to get all …’lets find true, REAL music’ on this topic because thats not what its about. I’m glad Mandy is finding a new niche and better quality music because her voice deserves it. Point is, music is an art form. Vocal quality, instruments, intonation, resonance, vibrato, beat, rhythm, accidentals, and dynamics are the tools and colors you need to paint the big picture: the song. I don’t know why it is so important to me, but it is. Music is an art that has been so heavily tampered with.

Lets leave it at this. I don’t like anything that is contrived for the masses. Do not make music to make a quick buck.

As catchy a song it is in the clubs…Heidi’s dream ( from The Hills) was never to be first and foremost a SINGER. That is Chicken poo for your ears. And Spencer’s rapping is terrible. but, I think everyone knows that. But this is a prime example of quick money making. LAME.

Oh, this is not a quick money maker, BUT, it is poor quality music for the masses. The song called “TATOO” by Jordin Sparks. I personally love Jordin Sparks voice. I saw her on American Idol, and I’m sure the writers wrote that for her because she’s about 18 years old. But still.. the lyrics to that song are horrendous. I didn’t even know it was her singing that song until my friend pointed it out. Because when I first heard that terrible chorus I turned it off.

“You’re still a part of everything I do, you’re on my heart just like a tattoo,
Just like a tattoo, I’ll always have you.”

What the F is that? I’m not THAT poetic..but I can sure as hell figure out something better to say than…you’re on my heart just like a tattoo. I thought she sounded like any other r&b young singer on the radio (paula deanda, jojo, etc) when in fact she is an AMERICAN IDOL. Meaning, she should stand out.

I’m not going to get into this anymore..my head hurts. I don’t even know why I started blogging about it in the first place.

OKAY, my new avenues: piano scores, jazz, light blues, rock, electronic?

I sing, write song lyrics, and play the guitar (though I have to admit I have been slacking a bit on the guitar recently). I have been able to combine the lyrics and the singing, and I am currently working on adding the guitar into the mix. I have high aspirations for this: I have been interested in sharing my voice and my songs with the world for as long as I can remember. This goal will require me to not only begin composing music for my songs, but also to record it. I have the necessary equipment and software to get started, and I am working on learning about composition. The demo may take awhile, but it is the ultimate goal.

I am very serious about this. I love singing, I love writing, I love music. I’ve always wanted to try to get somewhere with the ideas I have for my songs. I’m not looking to make the best album in the world—I know I am not ready for that yet. But I am looking to, with the equipment I have, record some basic material that I can share with the world to get started.

Piano and guitar are down for the first song, along with vocals for the first verse.

Nothing Seems Right 1 year ago

ok so ive written some songs that i thought i like but everytime i go over them i feel like they all sound the same. I can’t seem to get them to have that right sound and its killing me.I don’t know what it is but Ive given myself a goal (since that seems to keep focused the best) that by June i want to have everything ready so i can get started in the studio.

I’ve been DJ’ing for a year and a half, and I’ve played over 20 gigs… but i have yet to record a demo. I recently moved to a new city, and if I want to play out at all here, I need a demo! It’s just… once that little red light is flashing… it’s almost like fluidity ceases to exist, and all that’s left is me being nervous and messing up!
