In Italy there are ice cream shops in every corner! I was stunned at how much Nutella they have there. Enormous Nutella pots in every shop. And half of the many flavours have Nutella in them. And they have flavours I’d never seen before, such as Romeo and Juliet. And when you ask for a small ball, they give you a big one. I imagine what I would get if I’d asked for a big one. 15 months ago

We were walking around the city on a warm but not hot September day, observing numerous people enjoying cups of gelato with tiny wooden spoons. We had been trying to eat authentic Italian all week, and made our way to a little coffee shop/bakery that was selling various flavored gelatos.
Being spoiled Americans, we didn’t find the normal mix of vanilla and sweet flavors we were used to in our typical supermarket ice creams, but we gave it a go. I got a coffee-flavored gelato and she got some fruit flavor… orange, I think. We strolled around with our cups and little spoons feeling perfectly Italian. Neither as sweet or as creamy as our familiar ice cream, they were still okay and pretty refreshing to have during our pavement-pounding tour. At at four lire they were no more expensive than the bottles of water we were getting from the street vendors.
Not every culinary experience in Rome was as pleasant, but we felt it was an important part of our visit to indulge in the local foods and drinks as well as the scenery. We did break down and have Chinese one night. 18 months ago

How I did it: My father's law school (St. John's Law School) wanted to have an alumni trip to Italy. I don't think it was very widely known among all the old alumni, since it was primarily those who graduated in the 70s or earlier. There were not many of us, perhaps 4 or 5 families in total? But we went to Rome. They saw their branch of the law school in Rome, and I got to eat gelato. It was so deliciously worth it. I recommend a little place near la fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain). If you have difficulty in deciding on a flavour, go with lemon. That's what I'd say the Italians do best. Read how I did it… 2 years ago

It’s like paella or sangria in Spain, but the people in Italy are the biggest jerks in the world so get your gelato and go to Spain. 2 years ago

My friend Suzy and I were there for a week and we kept count of how many scoops we had. I think I had about 15 scoops, with repeat flavors though. Yum. I liked the AfterEight and a lot of the fruity flavors. Mmmm I can’t wait to go back and have some more.

Gelato is one of the best parts of Italy! I went in April of 2005 and it was quite cold while we were there. But, no matter where we were or how cold it was, we always stopped to get a gelato. Straciatella and Chocolate are awesome flavors! 5 years ago

I think what my friend Tommy said (paraphrased here) about gelato sums it up pretty well:
“I like ice cream and all, but seriously, where did we go wrong?!” 6 years ago
