I love animals so much they are my life i would stay up all night if you needed me to.
I now work with a local guinea pig rescue … I have guinea pigs of my own, and have gotten involved with this organization. I help out when I can, and it has worked out well for me. I also foster a guinea pig for them, a hard to place situation-a blind one eyed pig that is special needs. I am so glad I can do this, because it is so rewarding in so many ways. My work (the pay-the-bills-kind) is in human services, and is so mentally taxing and draining…that I needed the type of work that would be personally rewarding to me so that I don’t go insane. Listening to people’s issues and needs all freaking day long, and becoming burnt out from that.(with no short term end it sight)..this is the antidote for me.
I’ve only done it for a day…but it hard not to fall in love with all the animals at the shelter. They just break your heart and I have to use every fiber in me not to take them all home. Although I intend to continue my volunteer work…even one day has taught me a lot. I strongly encourage all those wanting to work at a shelter to do so, it will be worth it.
you are prepared to deal with lots of politics! the animal sheltering world is a wonderful place to learn both people and animal skills. depending on the shelter, you may end up helping to make tons of animals’ and people’s lives better. i am an adoption couselor at my local animal shelter and i love it! i wouldn’t trade it for anything…
