I used to record books a chapter at a time, for the local library. I am curious to know if there is software that would enable me to do this again from home, using my own computer.
People doing this are also doing these things:

I’ve engineered a few books, but I’d really like to take a stab at recording one from behind the mic. I have no delusions about how much work it can be, or how difficult it can be to tell a story well, but I’d really like to give it a go. I think with some practice I might be pretty good! =D
I have recorded House of Stairs by William Sleator for them the whole book.

Well, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. I’m very resistant to learning new technology in my old age; but I’ve finally figured out how to use Cool Edit Pro to record and edit mp3 files on my laptop. I got a headset awhile back in case I ever wanted to voice chat, and it turns out that the microphone in it is quite good. I like the versatility of using the headset. Now I can make any place my recording studio with my mobile office in a bag, carrying my laptop and headset. Too cool!
I’m planning on publishing a podcast starting in January; so I’ve been practicing with the software for that. Since I’ve been successful in recording a mini-segment and figured out how to filter out the hiss, etc, I’m ready now to begin recording my first audiobook. Once I publish that, there’s no excuse for me not to finish writing my second book.

I am happy with my contributions to http://librivox.org… I do not feel compelled to record an entire book, but to keep helping with chapters at librivox.org
Come join us there =)
well, I started recording Anne of Green Gables, and am really discouraged. I had no idea that I sounded like such a poor reader. But I’ll keep trying.
My husband and I were talking about how we might read aloud to one another and also record the reading … we would only select books in the public domain (i.e. from http://www.gutenberg.org/) so that we could then post them on a website and also possibly bookcross them.
