The site is really easy to use, and you can email and invite other relations to join in to fill in the gaps in your family tree. Its free and appears secure.

p.s – after seeing that there is a good online alternative for building a Wiki about my family I have decided to mark this goal as “Not worth it” and instead add “research my family tree using Geni.com” to my list.

..to use the current Wikipedia technologies to document ones family heritage in collaboration with other family members.
As for now, I am more interested in knowing how to implement it than actually investing my time on doing this.
I already know of two people whom would thank me a lot for letting them know this is possible.

My family wants to create a giant directory, with contact info, family trees, and tons of other stuff – and the task has fallen to me. I love wikis and wiki culture, and I think this is definitely the easiest way to go about this.

I’ve done the first step—registered www.viedge.xwiki.com
There are lots of challenges to using wikis to do this, but it seems worthwhile

I started to build a wikipedia about my family. On various sites and resources online, I can trace grandma’s paternal family all the way back to 18th century England. Grandpa’s line on the same websites ends at his parents. I can’t find any sign of my maternal line at all.
But, my paternal line wiki (at least that I’ve started) has my cousins, at least all the ones I could think of in a few minutes, my siblings, my parents and their siblings, and stuff. Grandma thinks it’d be really cool if I could include primary occupations and where the “article” people lived.
I’ll get right on it, Grandma!
