I have had to give up this attempt—not through lack of resolve or anything, but because my sister is down for a visit! She brought lots of things down that she made herself for us, which I could hardly refuse to sample :)

So the VW is postponed until say, Monday next week.

Okay.. 15 months ago

..the VW starts tomorrow..

My grand experiment in planetfully conscious eating is beginning on monday. I’ve stocked up on soya milk and fairtrade bananas, let starvation by attrition begin! :P

My main temptation is going to be Tesco value chocolate, which is cheap and hits that choc fix spot. I reckon dried aprocots might just do the trick instead..?!

A while ago I took a recipe book by Rose Elliott out of the library (which is incidentally vegan). Just now I made the leek and carrot soup on page 12, and it’s quite nice. I also learned how to work the Kenwood Chef sitting on top of the cupboard, so that was a bonus :)

While at Tesco I bought some soya milk, which I’ve never tried before. I’m not sure when I’m going to start the Vegan Week (VW for short), but am gradually getting ready!

I'm a vegetarian at the moment 15 months ago

and have been for most of my life (my family went veggie when I was quite young). Recently I read a book by Mark Watson called ‘Crap the the Environment’ which got me all fired up about being green. Apparently, it’s not just meat farming that damages the environment; keeping cows as milk-making machines is also contributing to the (un-)health of the planet.

Anyway, I’m going to try going vegan for a week. I have this idea in my head that it will be very difficult to give up milk and butter, which has stopped me from doing this before. How hard can it be, giving up dairy for a week? It might even make me eat a bit more healthfully.

I learned a lot 2 years ago

Someday I’ll probably commit to a vegan lifestyle. But I’m easing into it. Perhaps my next step might be to be vegan for a month.

One day to go 2 years ago

My week is over at the end of the day today.

I knew I could do it. It wasn’t that hard.

Taking a friend out to a nice restaurant for her birthday tonight 2 years ago

Now would be the time when I normally don’t even try to be vegan, because the place I want to take her doesn’t really cater to vegans. God forbid I should inconvenience anyone!

But I couldn’t break my commitment, so I considered either taking my friend to a different restaurant, or calling to see what they could do for me. As it turns out, they do have several items on the menu that can be prepared vegan. I’m so glad I called ahead, because once I get there I get much more anxious when I’ve parked and I’m hungry and I don’t see anything vegan on the menu. Then my tolerance for negotiating is lower and I feel like I’ll eat anything.

Although I live in a vegan household, I still occasionally use/consume animal products 2 years ago

Whenever it’s inconvenient to be vegan, I give in. My recollection is that I did the same thing when I was first considering eliminating meat from my diet, and that once I made a commitment to a meatless diet, it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.

Maybe becoming vegan will be the same way. So I’m going to try it for a week. Also, a local animal rights group is putting on a series of events this week, and I made a pledge to them that I would be vegan all week. Two days down (it started on Tuesday, for some reason), five to go.

Starting today! 2 years ago
