Franklyn 8 months ago

Saw this today – it’s watchable. But the new Blade Runner it ain’t. I think we’ll be seeing good things from the director of this – great looking film.

I want to keep doing this 8 months ago

I have a subscription to the nearest cinema and have been going more or less weekly for a couple of months now and I’m really loving it. I want to keep it up – the next film I plan to see is Franklyn

dark knight 15 months ago

i just saw a midnight session of the dark knight at the imax. some of my friends didn’t think it was such a great idea to see it there, but i think it enhanced the movie. it certainly enhanced my anxiety – there are so many aerial shots, i felt like i was falling into it (and had to close my eyes a couple of times).
heath ledger was incredible. horrifying and very funny. he stole the show. it’s so very sad that he’s gone.

Okay so I didn't go every week... 21 months ago

but 2007 is over and I went to the cinema a grand total of 34 times in the year – not bad I think. I made the most of the unlimited card I was bought for Christmas last year, saw some great (and not so great) films, and now I am ticking it off.

I Am Legend 22 months ago

Can’t write much right now, but I was a little dissapointed by Will Smith’s latest big budget blockbuster. Seemed a rip off of 28 Days Later and the ending seemed like a cheesy after thought. Loved the survival bits but the ‘butterfly’ line please! 6/10

We Own The Night 23 months ago

Just saw this Joaquin Pheonix and Mark Wahlberg flick a short while ago because I really like them both and quite enjoyed it.

I am not overly a huge fan of police dramas, but this was quite captivating – the opening sequence sure got the attention of every male in the audience, but I was suprised to see it was rated 15!

It was very looong – I needed two toilet breaks – but there was action, there was suspense and there was Joaquin doing his patented druggie/drunk act for a while.

I came away feeling sorry for Eva Mendes’ character, however, and not that bothered about the brothers. 6.5/10

Golden Compass 23 months ago

Since reading the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman, I have been literally itching with excitement about this film. As hard as it’s been I’ve tried to avoid watching the trailers and even averted my eyes from the billboard ads so I didn’t ruin the suprise, so you can imagine how eager I was to see it this weekend. Probably a little too over excited to be honest.

Well, the verdict? I loved parts of it – Ian McKellen was a great Iorek, for example – but (as is usually the case when you’ve read the book) I couldn’t help but be annoyed that the filmmakers had skimmed over some of the pretty fundamental elements of the storyline – Lyra’s betrayal for one.

Practically speaking it must’ve been really difficult to edit the first part of the trilogy into two or so hours of film, but I didn’t feel very much sympathy for the characters – who cares if Lyra saves Roger is what I thought from the film, but not the book… and the gyptians, scholars, Lee Scoresby, the Magisterium, and even the polar bears weren’t explored enough for my liking.

Plus, if I hadn’t read the book I think I would’ve been quite confused by a lot of it – so I don’t know how children will like it? Or understand it?

Aside from all that however, it did capture the magic quite well and the daemons are fantastic. So, hmm lets see, I’ll give it a 6/10 to be generous.

Saw IV 2 years ago

The start of Saw IV made me literally want to be sick which film fans of a morbid nature will get a kick out of.

There was one jumpy moment that almost made me scream and got my heart pumping faster than a stint in the gym.

But overall the storyline was confusing, there were too many characters to care what happened to each one, and the ending was shockingly bad compared to the original Saw film.

So not a complete waste of time, but not a satisfying watch either. 5/10
