I’m reading a book that suggests that as part of the third step we should express gratitude for everything, even if we aren’t grateful. Personally I think that’s taking it too far – I don’t see any reason to put on a plastic smile and thank the world at large for treating me like its personal punching bag since in my world that’s called lying and being a doormat – but I can see some possible value in expressing gratitude for what I am actually glad I’ve got. That much I’m willing to try. So, some things I’m grateful for tonight:
no major natural disasters here
car may be ugly and hot but it runs
my current place is bigger, quieter, and more attractive than the last one I lived in
not feeling like I have to hoard everything anymore
a good music collection
having bought or received things in my teens (clothing, books, CDs and records, videos, jewelry, and most of all good drums) that I can still enjoy having in my thirties
finally being a fairly good drummer and performer after all these years 8 months ago
