How to learn to play classical guitar by Leventhan

"A tough and challenging experience, but worth it nonetheless."

How I did it: Through perseverance, passion, and patience. Practice every day for a
few hours (classical guitar is significantly harder, by the way) and
learn from others as much as possible. You have to really be passionate
about learning how to play guitar. To get past the tough times, you need an inner drive to excel in it; not just a half-hearted one like say, impressing some friends.



There will be times where it will be easy, and times where it will feel that progress is impossible.


You have to really, really want it.
Then go do it.

Lessons & tips: Ask yourself if you really want to do this, then commit a block of time
every day or every week for practice. The old adage comes to mind,
'Practice makes perfect'. It certainly reminded me of the amount of
hard work you need to give to suceed.

Start with the fundamentals, regardless of how unappealing it seems to be at first. You'll need it.

Resources: Support from my parents, music teachers, and online resources. There
are loads of resources for learning how to play guitar nowadays, do
some Google searches and I'm confident you'll find some good ones.

    lessons are a good idea for most people 5 months ago

    so about 3 weeks ago , i started my classical guitar lessons. lessons are extremely important with this style of guitar if you want to see rapid progress. i could probably sit down and read and watch videos to figure out the technique but it would possibly take me ages to reach royal conservatory grade 10. as well, lessons keep you playing. i use to take lessons for electric guitar for about 2 years and then decided to teach myself once i knew what to watch for. but then once i stopped lessons, after about 2 months, i stopped playing all together.

    Step 1 - Learn to read music 6 months ago

    At the moment I can play the guitar reasonably well, but only a few memorised pieces. I have the dexterity to handle some intricate and fiddly melodies, but very little understanding of music notation.

    So – my first step is to force myself to play simple pieces, with a metronome ticking along, so that I become fluent in basic musical notation.

    Got a Mexican Guitar - classical! 23 months ago

    My wife got me a 25 year old classical guitar – so now I am playing around on it. Not sure what to do next except for taking online lessons… I suppose I need to select a song and learn it so that I know at least one song. I do know most of the chords to Jim Croce’s “Time in a Bottle”... so that might qualify as song 1….
