so it’s the perfect time to do this. I am a shocking collector of stuff. If I see brochures or pamphlets or free magazines I always pick them up, put them in my bag and then keep the interesting ones…just in case. Now it’s time to be ruthless and get rid of the stuff I don’t need or love.

And I actually can’t wait to get started. I am a big proponent of throwing things out- unfortunately I married a sentimental pack rat.
I wondered if there really was a connection between holding on to useless things, and not being able to move forward so I wanted to find out for myself if getting rid of things would motivate me.
Initially, my goal was to get rid of 50 things in 5 days, but there was one day where I didn’t get rid of anything, and then another day where I got rid of several things so I decided to make it 100 things in 1 week.
I kept a list, and wrote down everything. Some of the things were tangible items whereas other things were intangible but represented useless things. For example, when I went to the gym I wrote down losing unnecessary weight = gone! It felt good just to write that sentence, because it represented letting go of something that I didn’t need, yet was in some way ‘clutter’ in my life.
Once I got to 75 items, it was such a powerful feeling that I wanted to keep going. This was definately a motivating exercise in cleaning, organizing, and getting rid of stuff that I didn’t need! I think that it helped me to get rid of a bunch of shoeboxes that I probably would have continued to store. It was amazing to get rid of the paper shoeboxes, and to suddenly have more space in my apartment.
I was skeptical at first, but it was definately worth doing!
