I’ve been thinking about what it is to help somebody to be their authentic self. I think first of all, it means being extremely vigilant to see the difference between my idea of what I would want her to be and what she truly is (if there’s a disjunction). It means being open to always having her participate in my favorite activities without forcing her to like what I do (e.g. running). It means sincerely trying to see the joy in her activities and trying to participate without judgement (e.g. disco dancing ;) ).
I think most of all it means creating an environment of support and love where she can always feel free to express what she thinks, dreams, wishes, where she can experiment and make false starts without ever feeling like she can injure my love for her or that I’ll ever use any of it against her later.
