Job #5: Nanny 2 years ago

Nannies in my city make up to $20 per hour. Not bad. I have experience watching children and my local college offers certification in child care.

I am certified in First Aid, CPR (infant/child/adult) and can drive. This is the basic requirements for obtaining a nanny position with a good family.

I could also work for childcare agency that works like a temp agency.

Job #2: Receptionist 2 years ago

I like to meet and greet people and am a morning person. I enjoy helping people and making them feel welcome.

Receptionists can earn from $25,000 and up. I know a receptionist who makes over $50K a year.

    Can you say “Good Morning!”

Being a receptionist is also a transitional job. Skill that are needed are good verbal skills, knowledge of switchboards or multi line phones, detailed oriented (take good message), people skills and a thick skin. The last one being very important.

Being a receptionist you are the first person a visitor sees. A clean and neat appearance is a must. Note: I didn’t say expensive.

In today’s world, everyone wants a receptionist. From the small start ups to the big corporations.

So this is a lucrative career choice if all else fails.

It also is a job you can do in any state.

Job #1: Small Business Owner 2 years ago

The first time someone paid me for my photography was a moment I will never forget. It gave me confidence to know that I can use my mind and my two hands to earn a living on my terms.

Starting a business is a scary thing. I have been thinking about it for a few years but never had the guts to take the first step. My need for freedom over my life pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me realize that I am control of how my business goes. I don’t have to do it full time to start, I can do it part time and grow as things improve.

I agree with anyone who tells you to do what you love and everything will fall into place. I enjoy my part time business because it doesn’t feel like work. I love to write, I love to take photos and I love to sell books that are good or useful. I enjoy the time I take to do them.

An example is when I go shopping for books I always stop by a local coffee shop and have a quiet cup of coffee. It clears my head and gives me a bit of me time.

I like the fact that there are places and people to help me with my small business. I don’t have to do it alone. I learn and grow as I go.

This is why I feel that if I lose my job that being a Small Business Owner is #1 on my jobs to do. I feel that each person has at least one solid business idea that will work if given half the chance.

About this goal 2 years ago

About a month ago people were getting laid off at my job. People told me I had nothing to worry about but a pink slip can land on anyone’s desk for any reason. I realized I was very nervous and ended up spending two whole weeks worrying about my future. Yes, I side income with my small business but I’m only doing it part time.

I thought about how we would pay for our bills and how we could cover my medical needs without insurance. I have survived many layoffs in the past few years but I never get too comfortable.

I got to thinking about what jobs I could do if I lost my current job. What are the jobs I can get with no experience? What jobs (including transitional)could I get with my current experience? What jobs could I get with a bit of low cost training?

So I sat down and wrote how much I need to make to cover my current lifestyle and what jobs I could get to tide me over or would make interesting career changes.

I made a list of 100 jobs but I will start by listing my top 50. Feel free to join in and list your own.

After I created my list, I felt a bit better about my situation. I have a small part time business, a list of jobs that I can do to feed my family and the understanding that a pink slip doesn’t have to mean the end of my family.
