New Isabella What am I waiting for?

What is the importance of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”? The play is subtitled “A Trivial Comedy for Serious People”. I have to say that, as I read it, the play struck me as being utterly trivial, especially in comparison to Jack London’s “The Call of the Wild”, which I had just finished rereading. How do you compare witty tea-time repartee and romantic high-society hijinks with life-and-death struggle for survival in the harsh, frozen, wild Yukon?
I have become somewhat obsessed with finding the answers to these questions, as well as with comparing and contrasting the lives of Oscar Wilde and Jack London, who lived and wrote at roughly the same time. I’ve been reading and researching, and the truth seems neither pure nor simple.
