How to visit guatemala

 "For twenty years I'd wanted to visit Guatemala. When I heard a friend had moved there, I arranged a visit the following month."
How I did it: The trick for me was finding an excuse to go: in my case, I had the offer of inexpensive lodging for two weeks. Once that was in place, I had the inspiration to research and sign up for Spanish classes. That's what I did for the first week. During that time I got tips from people about other things to do, and spent the second week exploring. Since then, I've been back for a second trip, this one five weeks long. Lessons & tips: Enroll in some sort of volunteer program or class so you have an anchor while you're there -- a way to be connected to other people. Stay flexible in your plans so unexpected opportunities can appear. Resources: Francisco Marroquin is a good school. I didn't like Christian Spanish Academy so well. |

How I did it: Bought a ticket to Guatemala City on Priceline, bought a Lonely Planet Guide Book, and packed a backpack. That's literally ALL of the preparation we did. We grabbed a taxi from Guatemala City straight to Antigua. So glad we did. Antigua is the perfect place to start and Guatemala City isn't that appealing. From there we got a handle on how to find places to stay and how to do transportation. With that down there was no stopping us. Read how I did it…

I haven’t traveled outside Canada since I have had kids (almost 20 years ago). My partner is not interested in travel so I am planning a trip to Central America by myself. I am very nervous about this>

I did a report over Guatemala a few weeks ago and it looks so freaking beautiful!! I can’t wait until I save up enough money to go!

Ok. So my brother joined the Peace Corps and is leaving for Guatemala next week. I’m going to worry like crazy for the next 2 1/2 years while he’s there, but am looking forward to visiting him w/ my husband, sister, and her boyfriend in December.

Great country full of friendly people. Visit the big tourist spots like Antigua and Tikal, but make sure you go to other spots like Quetzaltenango, Chichicastenago (for their Sunday market), Semuc Champey, and the Rio Dulce. I spent 2 months there in the summer of 2005 and it was great. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
