There are a couple of words that just grate on my nerves, and which I would love to remove from my daily speech. The extraneous “like” is definitely one of them. The other word is “got”, as in, “I got a book”, or “I got rid of it”. To me, it seems like a lazy word. People use it to substitute for too many other words, and it really, really irritates me. I’m going to make a concerted effort to remove these two words from my speech.

I think this is pretty much done. I don’t say like all the time anymore. Thank heavens for that :).

you know what, i think it’s okay to do it, and while i could spend time on taking it out of my everyday speech, there are so many things i could do that would be a BETTER use of my time.

babybat1524 has more of a psycho mother in law than either of us realized.
when something I frequently say starts annoying me more often than not, it’s probably time to kill it.
I felt it’s worth it, anyway, and for “like” it wasn’t too hard. some other phrases I’m sure I would have had more trouble with, though.

Oh, I must try this! It’s shameful – I’m 25, and I still speak like a middle-schooler to the point that no one in my conversational world says anything, they’re all like...
Grr. ::determined::

Megan loves music...It's really the best.
It’s so hard! I’m starting to progress a little because I am catching myself saying it instead of just not thinking and saying it in almost every sentence. I’ve found it helps if you slow down and think a little before you say something (another one of my goals!)

Definitely think this is influenced by who you spend time with, and chatty, quick-fire conversations with my girl friends get me into this bad habit, but urgh it really irritates me when I say it too much!

Apparently who I’m spending time with has a great impact upon this. My accent even changes when I spend time with different people. Sometimes I use recieved pronunciation and at others I sound like a southerner and it seems more often recently I sound like a northerner, though I am by birth from the Sud de l’Angleterre.
Luke noted recently how I don’t seem to say the word “like” so much, so I think I’m getting there with this one- but I haven’t even really thought about it. I guess things have a way of working their ways out of your system if they annoy you enough.
At the moment my “acting” has left me with a “farmer voice” which is actually most irritating- more so than the extraneous “like” in my speech and I’m just hoping I can find my old accent/dialect again soon, either that or I can seriously see myself going mad. :)
