well I just got a dvr and “ondemand” with my cable… so it’ll probably be awhile before I want to work on this.

however… my tv watching experience is so much better with the dvr and ondemand.

    =)

    Well..... 2 years ago

We did pretty okay with our tv free week. Only two videos…one viewing instigated by me, one by Mr. Meticulous. We let them watch it on Sat. so we could hang out in the am, but it was limited, and they didn’t really watch it anyway. It was just “there”.

Then my poor kiddo landed in the hospital for three days and boy, have we ALL watched a bunch of tv this week!

I also read a bit. I came across an article that claimed research has shown that children who watch tv solely on weekends do not seem to be negatively affected by it in the way that week-long tv watchers are.

Anyway, new goal….kids just watching tv on weekends so Mr. M and I can catch up with each other without interuptions.

Calling this one a “success”....and moving on.

    Oh dear... 2 years ago

This afternoon, I packed up the bikes and kids so we could hit the rail trail and we got smacked with a thunderstorm, gale force winds and pelting rain. We got soaked.

We booked it back home, they had a warm bath and are now watching Snow White and the Seven Dwarves in my bed!

I am tired and I’m going to join them.

It’s not tv…really….is it? I don’t think so. This is a “special treat”...a video that will be over in one hour. Different than show after show after JUST ONE MORE show.

I don’t feel guilty and I still consider this week a success.

Day 3 tv free..... 2 years ago

Well….this is downright painless! To be honest, I don’t watch much tv as it is. My problem is the computer. Maybe I will have to work in a new goal dealing with that. Today, we were on the fly most of the day…preschool, riding bikes, music class, grocery store, some stuff for my volunteer job. When we got home, they both napped pretty hard. When they woke up, the 4 year old wanted to “make a band” with me so he played my old guitar and I played a bugle. Thank god we have no neighbors, it was fierce. Then he looked for bugs while I prepped dinner, shucked corn together, I cleaned out the fridge and gave the chickens the old veggies with the two year old and stood there FOREVER while he figured out the latch to the chicken yard…Dad came home, they all hung out on the porch while I cooked, dinner, bath, story, bed….NO TV.

    THEY DON’T EVEN CARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I watch Lost on the internet, does that count? :)

Day 2 without the idiot box 2 years ago

Wow…this is very easy. My biggest obstacle (I thought) would be the kids….what are they going to do all day and HOW am I going to get any of my stuff done if I’m not (or it’s not) entertaining them?

Well, let’s see….we did puzzles this morning, then my son (4) went outside to help the mason workers up until lunchtime. They had him mixing morter (?), then slapping it on the house, chiseling rocks…etc…I checked (often!) to see if he was becoming a pest, but they told me he was a big help. And I saw it, too, he really was. The workers treated him to lunch…and he was just so proud of himself. The two year old stayed close to me all morning, fed the chickens, collected the eggs, played with his toys and legos. Then we met friends at the park, then met Dad at the appliance store to get new washer/dryer….our day is done, they are in bed now and NO TV. Another busy day tomorrow, so no worries there.

My day was tv free..... 2 years ago

and my kids’ was too! No one asked for it, and we didn’t miss it at all!

    t.v. free 2 years ago

I did this for six years about five years ago. I had young kids and thought….... we do not need t.v. It worked for us, it was fine. I didn’t miss it. Now that we have t.v. again, we really don’t watch it that much. My husband watches the news some nights, I watch the odd Oprah show…..other than that…my kids really don’t watch it. We use our television more for movies…..
