As far as possible, anyway. 2 years ago

I’m still working on the Lushootseed language (see my other goal). One of the most intriguing things about other languages is the words they do and don’t include. Apparently the Inuit (don’t know what the languages concerned are called in that case, I’m sure there are quite a few, sorry!) do not in fact have 50 words for snow. Lushootseed does have quite an excess of words for different types of salmon (yum!). However, as the Salish linguistic champion Vi Hilbert is fond of pointing out, it has no word for “can’t”.

I was thinking about that today and I thought, how would I do things differently if I didn’t use that particular English word, or the concept behind it, so darn much. I am forever putting things down to actual impossibility when in fact they’re more likely to be down to laziness, or fear, or a belief that I may not be ‘allowed’ (by whom?) to do whatever it is, or the fact that it really isn’t something I actually want to do and I just don’t have the guts to say so.

So with that in mind, I’m going to make this one of my goals, and see what happens.

If you subscribe to me or otherwise just bump into me on this site and catch me violating this, please feel free to give me a friendly nudge.
