cyrillusCan't wait to order beer in Middle English

I’m going to try to learn it next holidays. The Gawain-poet dialect, not Chaucer, which makes it way more difficult… But hey, nobody forced me to try to become a PhD, right? ;)

Wish I knew what to begin with – simply reading stuff is good, but is it the best you can do? 6 years ago

cityondown78Totally useless but still fun

I think it’s impossible to be fluent in Middle English, seeing as it’s a completely dead language. But it’s still a lot of fun to speak. I learned in my high school Honors Major British Writers class—we were reading The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, and my teacher had us read the first 20 lines or so of each tale (in ME) as we came to it. We also had to sight-read some lines for our midterm, that section of which I got full marks on (yay me). It’s really quite simple once you get the hang of it. I have a pronunciation key, if anyone wants a copy. Sweete (sway-tuh)! 7 years ago
