i grew up biking everywhere. it was my mode of transport. in a culdesac with my two brothers; no hands around the block … michael made it 98% of the way before he looked back and hit his noggin on a tree. To the park, or the Safeway that had our arcade games. this was our way. Faster than roller blades, or skateboards, which we also used – dirt bikes were king!

Awhile ago i was getting pulled over for driving with out a license pretty regularly. Mostly, because to rectify the first incident, one had to go through this horrible ordeal of bending over and taking it in the ass from the courts.

During this asstaking experiment, i rode my bike, i peddled hard and fast in the morning, rearranged habits, got to know the woman at the dry cleaners; folded my clothes in backpacks; picked out shoes for funtionality; figured out the bus schedule; found a sense of worth without going to iraq, or honing my sniper skills; and i lost weight.

Eventually, i paid the courts, bought a car off my best friend, and drove off into this whole other existance. Recently, i was plowed into by a woman running a red and have come back to the bicycle as a means of functional transportation. At first i was a bit embarrased. My dad has really taken bicycling off road in the last 6 months, taking on trails and mountain rocks on his Specialized Hardrock SPort.

My Diamondback just does not seem to cut it anymore. its old and out dated … the gears are scarred and blunted; and it only sticks to two gears (barely). i used the hell outta that thing!

i’m looking at trek 7.3 HybridFX Fitness Road bike, a Giant Cypress ST or a Hardrock Sport like my dad’s, or quite possibly another diamond back mountain bike.

As it is, i’m biking my ass off. But it’s kinda kewl i’m not complaining bout the gas prices – or sending our military off to a pointless war. i’m working on cleaning up New Orleans, and not building up Vegas.

As this progresses, i will eventually purchase some sort of vehicle but i’m thinking Vespa Grand Tourismo or Motorcycle and not S.U.V.

i’m most excited about picking up my bike from the bike shop on Wednesday.

andar en bicicleta: es mi nueva fascinacion. _

i got rid of my old way too small black bike…now i have my mom’s old kickass blue and white bike with curvy touring handlebars! i am in love with it! it is, like, my chariot. i want to give it a noble name. or something.

one time i almost got killed. that was sobering. i need to pay more attention on the road. but for the most part it is just a beautiful adventure, letting me get more exercise and fresh air and saving me money (and time in some cases!) and letting me get to know my home better.

i especially love biking to david’s house because there is a drop dead gorgeous park/ arboretum/ nature place right between our houses that i get to ride through at sunset…

and biking to cambridge because i get to bike along the giant river and it is fun and beautiful.

the other day i was able to bike to the center where i took the SATs. that made me inexplicably happy. even though i was worried about my bike getting stolen the whole time. (sketchy neighborhood)

One year of car-less-ness! 2 years ago

I stopped driving around this time last year, and got back on my bike. Sold the car, rode around in the -20C weather, almost lost my bike to four feet of snow…but I’d do it all again.

Ride on!

get rid of your car. Or don’t have a car to begin with.

Then again, I’m a “plunge headfirst and ask questions later” kind of person. Seems to work well enough for me!

i missed biking so much while i was in regina… it feels so great to be back home, where my beloved bicycle is and where the weather is decent enough for biking..! since i spent a good four months (at least) not biking at all, i know it will take a little while for me to get back into the habit, and re-establish the endurance necessary to bike up all of the hills in the area. it will be great once i’ve moved closer into town, and there more than ever i will be able to bicycle pretty much everywhere. i’d like to get back into the habit of bicycling daily, even if it’s just a gentle cruise around the area at sunset.
